21st Amendment Hell or High Watermelon Wheat Ale
Appearance:
The beer pours a light straw color with an exceptionally large new-snow white head.
Smell:
Smell is nothing impressive or remarkable. Smells like an ale with some hops and some malts. No discernible watermelon scent.
Taste:
I served this really cold and it tasted pretty good. Wheat up front for sure with watermelon on the back. Not too strong at all (as I was fearing) but the fruit is definitely there. Not a fake candy watermelon, either, but the real watermelon flavor that’s delicious and crisp. Just like the real fruit is largely water, this trait is present in the beer. Tastes like a watered down wheat. Refreshing, just watery.
Very little carbonation was present, which was surprising, considering the size of the head.
Numbers:
Picked up a 4 pack of cans at Trader Joe’s for $5 or so. ABC is 4.9% ABV. Brewed by 21st Amendment Brewery in San Francisco.
Overall:
Certainly not a complex beer, but if you bought a 4 pack of watermelon beer at TJ’s expecting otherwise, it’s yer own dang fault. This is not a highly crafted beer, but it’s certainly refreshing. Yeah, it’s gimmicky, but it’s well worth a few bucks to cool you down on a hot day.
