Alan Abbs is screwed, well, its not what you think. Welcome to Vol State 500k, where Alan has finished running in the “screwed category” (unsupported, carrying everything you need in a pack) across Tennessee. Not only did he finish the race, but he did it in 4 days, 11 hours, 31 minutes, 21 sec – a course record. Listen while you run or grab a cold one and listen-up to the tales out of Tennessee. It was great find out how Alan was feeling at Vol State.

On a side note I think you should find out what was going on in Joe Fejes head during it as well.

This was a great interview! Y’all were giggling like a bunch of 5K runners listening to tales of a 50K or a 100-miler. I concur with hospitality of Tennesseans, it can’t be beat!

Excellent podcast. As the last official screwed runner I can confirm that there were still people out running this long after Alan finished. What an amazing race.

    Hey Eric, I was the very last person to finish a little under 10 days. So many stories. One of the most memorable happened in the last 4 miles of the race when in a totally delirious state I was chasing down mailboxes chatting them up for directions convinced they were other runners. Totally amazing race.

        Thanks. I’m not sure if it’s gong to happen for me this year. I just started a new job after being out of work for 5 months so cash is kind of low for me right now. I had planned on doing it. If I can work it out I would definitely like to do it this year. Definitely next year though. I’m planning another Florida double cross this year for sure. 320 miles.

I believe Brian earned the nickname “Big Backpack,” and in one of the daily reports I remember Laz saying something like “we saw Big Backpack hauling himself out of a ditch he had fallen in, so we averted our eyes and kept going.” it cracked me up. But all kidding aside, people like Brian are what the race is all about- allowing folks to test their limits. He’s a trooper.

And, signing up is as easy as putting your name on the spreadsheet. No commitment! 🙂

GReat Interview! We all knew Alan would rock the Volstate course but nobody even thought he would do it in 4 1/2 days. I was 3 days back and my body was shot. Great Job Alan! Hopefully, looking forward to running with you again.
