Hitachino Nest Real Ginger Brew

bottle glassAppearance

Dark blood orange in color. It’s murky with little to no head and no discernable carbonation.

Smell

Ginger, malts, apply and orange peel. Not beer-like at all.

Taste

Hmmm, interesting stuff. No hops, no bitterness, some malts.  Definitely some ginger and some earthy aspects.  No alcohol flavor.

The ginger is that of the candied variety rather than the raw. One of the least beer beers I’ve ever tasted.  I’m a big ginger fan and though I was expecting a big whollop of ginger right in the nose, I’m happy the brewer held back.

The lack of carbonation is strange, but for some reason, seems appropriate for the beer. A spritzy ginger beer would have no credibility.

Who/What

Brewed by the Kiuchi Brewery in Japan.  8% ABV. 11.2oz bottle for $5.99.  Be warned: The 8% hits hard.

Final Thoughts

This is not a novelty beer…It’s hard to really call it a beer at all.  Will I drink it again? Absolutely! Not sure what I can pair it with, but this is begging for the perfect Asian dish for an accompaniment.  For the price, it’s an interesting beer that deserves a taste.

Cheers!
