The Lost Abbey Saint’s Devotion Belgian Pale Ale
Appearance
Hazy and golden with a hefty mound of thick head on top. Upon closer inspection, there’s a massive yeast ball sitting at the bottom of the bottle that got me excited. Even with a careful pour I had a fair amount of floaters in the glass.
Smell
Bready malt and yeasty…definite Brett on the nose. Typical Belgian “spice” but nothing that stood out as overly exciting or exotic.
Taste
Taste followed smell. The Brett was nice. Again, typical Belgian spices and maltiness. Lighter than some big Belgians but not crisp. Not overly exciting at all.
Info
I think I paid $9 for a 375mL corked and caged bottle.
Also, gotta love an Abbey ale that takes its ABV to 666. Ha! If nothing else, they’ve got a great sense of humor.
The Lost Abbey brewery is in San Diego and has the tagline “for sinners and saints alike.”
Overall
Pretty good Belgian. I’m generally a fan of ales with Brettanomyces yeast, but this sort of fell flat. Would I drink it again? Sure. I may even buy it again, but that’s coming more from my atheist attitude than anything.
