Ultramarathon Daily News | Mon, Jan 3

Welcome back! I don’t know about you, but that was a sorely needed break! Our family went to Park City for a week, got stuck in an insane traffic/storm in Tahoe, painted a room, went iceskating (and didn’t get hurt!) built a ton of LEGO, went on fun runs (with and without snowshoes), and really just relaxed. I hope you and yours took it easy and recharged those batteries. Dammit, 2022 is going to be a great year so let’s get on with it.

Lots of changes over the New Year as athlete sponsorship contracts were dropped and/or renewed. The big changes came from Dakota Jones leaving Salomon and Dylan Bowman parting ways with The North Face. Not sure who’s decision is was for either, but we’ll wait to see where each athletes lands. If I missed any other changes, please let me know either by PM or in the comments.

TWIR/IRF: Justin Mock runs down all the ultramarathon and trail running results from this past week. Biggest changes to me is IRF’s change in typeface and formatting. It’s slight, but after seeing the same font for so many years, it’s taking some getting used to! Also though…Bandera should be a helluva shootout next week. Lots of fun names on that entrants list as they all vie for a spot at Western States.
[edit: Maybe it’s not IRF”s new typeface, but new look from the updated Monterey IOS? I’m seeing new typefaces on a few other sites too. Anyone?]

Also, both mens and womens road 5k records broken at same race over the weekend.

Speaking of Western States, you know there are other races out there right? Here are five fun ultramarathons that don’t require insane entrant procedures.

According to my calendar, that five years of no alcohol for me. I’ll admit to being pretty proud of it and don’t envision every going back. Thanks for everyone who’s reached in the past out and a hearty hug to all those who are just starting this journey. You’ve got this.

A FTM trans swimmer writes an op-ed in defense of Lia Thomas about her right to swim against women.

The running world is full of people fleeing addictions and other issues. This guy spent over a million bucks on the lottery until he found running and was able to channel his energy in a positive way.

I didn’t get to watch much of it, but did manage to catch some of the incredible Hakone Ekiden…something I shared with an incredible 1/3 of the household in Japan. How’s that for viewership? More on the race here.

If you haven’t yet watched The Rescue on NatGeo about the 2018 cave rescue in Thailand, queue it up and watch it soon. Incredible footage and storytelling, even for an event for which we knew the outcome.
