Ultramarathon Daily News: Spooky Halloween Edition
Happy Halloween! Welcome to the “Ultra Scare-athon” Daily News. It’s been fun compiling the news while Eric is overseas, but I hope he survived the Himalayas and has a safe trip back to the states so the URP Daily News can return to normal. – Pete
For a healthy dose of Halloween gore, check out the URP Black Toenail Hall of Fame. Or how about Ben Nephew’s race report from the Cats Tail Trail Marathon? (I think Eric previously linked to this one.)
‘Tis the season for costume-themed runs. Has anyone ever run the Darth Valley Challenge?
Okay, one more plug for my blog since it’s Halloween related. I wrote a scary short story based on my recent experience at the Oil Creek 100 and a supposed haunting in the park where the race takes place.
ATRA reports on the U.S. team’s day at the IAU Trail World Championships. Looks like it was a rough go for Team USA on a very tough course.
iRunFar’s this week in running.
Good read: Who is Pete Kostelnick?
Laura Kline is a New Yorker who’s had a lot of top results in races around the northeast this year, and she credits veganism for her success.
What Halloween races and fun runs did you partake in this weekend? I volunteered at a local race that runs point-to-point, downhill for 5 miles. Scotie Jacobs was the the overall winner, and more importantly, winner of the Dewey Cox look-alike contest. (Photo credit: Tyler Finck)
Another quick plug: The above race is called It’s All Downhill From Here, and it’s a Red Newt Racing event – the same folks behind the Cayuga Trails 50 (USATF 50M Trail Championship) and the Whiteface VK and Sky Race, plus some gnarly trail marathons (Cat’s Tail and Breakneck) , the PR friendly, point-to-point Water Gap 50k, and several others. Based out of Ithaca, NY, RNR is known their beautiful and challenging courses around Upstate NY. I’ve run several of their races and it’s always a great experience.
No Ultramarathon Content: The owner of Yuengling announced announced his beer company is officially supporting Trump. The result was as expected – tons of people flipped out and threatened boycotts.
Here’s a long Runners World piece entitled ‘Running While Female’. It seems that while trail running isn’t immune to the issues addressed in the article, it’s definitely much less of a problem compared to road running.
Heat training + altitude training = greater improvement in performance.
