She ran her first ultra at OCC (part of the UTMB series) and seems to still be on a high from it. Great attitude!

If you’re one the people who prefer bright lights on the trail, this Kickstarter project might be for you. Looks pretty cool.

I don’t have a lot of experience with women’s running skirts (I know, right?), but this runner feels there’s still a gap between men’s functional clothing and women’s being made primarily for aesthetics. Does she have a point? And can you recommend a skirt with pockets?

Totally checked on women’s shorts with/without pockets. Had ZERO problem finding a huge handful of shorts for women with pockets. The same brands that make shorts with pockets for men (Pearl Izumi, the North Face, Salomon, New Balance) have plenty of offerings of shorts for women with a zippered pocket. I’m not sure where she’s searching, but Running Warehouse is FULL of them in styles from butthuggers to knee shorts. I’d argue that women’s clothing in 2015 is HIGHLY functional and her point may be about a decade old.

If you are talking about the little zippered pocket in the back of most women’s running shorts, it’s crap and complete waste of time. Most female runners I know (myself included) don’t use it because it fits about one gel pack. What we want is actual POCKETS. And those are harder to find. Moving Comfort used to make shorts with a longer inseam and actual pockets and they are heaven…HEAVEN I tell you. Of course they don’t make them anymore. 😉

  I have a hard enough time finding men’s shorts that have pockets (not counting the useless little zippered butt pocket thing) that I like. I couldn’t imagine finding them in women’s styles.

Need a running skirt with pockets? Try JWalking Designs (http://jwalkingdesigns.com/) and T-Star Running (http://www.tstarrunning.com/). Both have good products, both have pockets. JWalking makes a nice kilt for men and T-Star has a Potty Panel for women.

That’s awful. Looks like he ran Wasatch 100 and was likely driving home from it. Fell asleep or zoned out? Sad reminder that it’s probably a good idea to have a driver after a hard race.

I’ve gotten more and more to where I sew my own running kit. Jalie has a great running skirt pattern (it’s #2796 if you google it) I invested $50 nearly four years ago in the pattern and several yards of lycra and have 4 skirts that are still going strong – ran in one this morning. And the pattern includes functional pockets. And even better, when I need more I just have to buy some fabric since I already have the pattern. I hardly ever run in shorts anymore as the skirt is probably even more comfortable.

My wife has running skirts made by Mountain Hardwear I think. They have a nice zipper pocket.Reference

I was happy this summer to find short-sleeved shirts on a women’s shirt that weren’t cutesy cap sleeves. Pockets aren’t a priority for me, but I don’t wear skirts either and that seems to be where most of the pockets are?

I had the same feelings about OCC this year — it was an amazing race. Not my first ultra, but hands down my happiest 50K, ever. And it was hard, no doubt! Congrats to her…welcome to the dark side! 🙂
