Not sure of all the circumstances here but I think the takeaway is that we need to be sure we are adequately rested before getting into a vehicle after a long race. In one of my not smartest moves I drove 5.5 hrs home after an 11.5 hr 50 miler. I must have had 2 mega sized red bulls and 2 5hr energy’s to try to keep focused. I regretted the decision to drive back that same night and I will never do that again.Reference

During residency training I had a few friends in accidents and one die after pulling 30+ hours of surgery training. Fortunately as an anesthesiologist I rarely pull more than 24 hours but it is well known in literature on sleep deprivation that it is sometimes worse than being drunk. So yes, be careful in planning post-race travel. One’s perception of being able to handle just a few more hours without sleep does not fit with reality.

Glad you reminded us of this! I’m going to order one but have one question. I’m closer to a 30″ waist and I’m curious as to what size to order. I know you said you are a 32″ and the medium works great but do you think I ought to go with a small? I too will be using this with my simple hydration bottle some of the time.   I have a 26 inch waist and wear the small – it fits great and doesn’t move around at all. I wore it for about 24 hours at CCC – and had almost 3,000 calories crammed in it!

I finished Wasatch this past weekend and was surprised at how forgetful and inattentive I was on Saturday evening and on Sunday morning. 1) I almost left my phone in the shuttle van; 2) I almost forgot to sign the credit card bill after dinner; 3) I arrived through the security check at the airport with two bags, but sat down for breakfast with only one bag (then rushed back to security). I was never in pain during or after the race, but its obvious that more than my muscles were beaten up by the experience. I certainly didn’t trust myself to drive even on Monday morning – and didn’t. I was shocked and saddened by the news. It hits really close to home.

Very sad. In terms of lessons learnt, a recent 100 miler in the UK stated this in their pre-race email: “There are NO SLEEPING FACILITIES AT THE FINISH LINE. There are plenty of options for accommodation in Wye, please make sure you think and plan ahead for how you will feel after running 100 miles. We urge you all to get some rest before you attempt to drive home. After the terrible tragedy of 2012 when a competitor passed away driving home from the UTSW 100, we were all reminded of how dangerous it is to attempt to drive home in a state of exhaustion. You must take responsibility for yourselves.”Reference
