It’s interesting that so few people like out and backs. I love that format, as we get to see each other, there’s an modicum of familiarity with the course, and my mind does well knowing the course is net neutral.
I prefer loops or point to point, especially if it’s narrow single track such that passing is hard. But seeing other runners is a nice benefit of out and backs.
Maybe the reason people vote against out-and-backs is because half the fun of races is seeing new places, and not to see any place twice while there’s still a place you haven’t seen once!
With one-big-loop winning the vote as big as it seems to do at this point the other results become mathematically less reliable. Ranking the alternatives 1-4 might produce a different result for place 2-4, out-and-back might be the second favorite of many of those who could now only vote for one-big-loop. Just a thought.
The problem with out-and-backs are often just having enough room on the trail for runners to go two directions. Singletrack is not conducive to that format.
